Four Chattanooga police officers were placed on leave after being involved in a shooting Sunday, Assistant Chief Glenn Scruggs said Wednesday.

Police shot a man outside a home on Ashland Terrace on Sunday morning after receiving a report that he was “lurking around” the residence, according to a statement released by the department later that day. The man may have been trying to break into cars nearby, according to a statement from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday.

The man reached for a knife on the ground when officers began giving commands and tried to take him into custody, according to TBI.

Two officers fired stun guns at the man, and one officer shot him with a gun, TBI’s statement said.

He was taken to a hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries, police said Sunday. No officers were hurt.

“Our officers are doing well, and the person that was involved in it is surviving and is doing as well as to be expected,” Scruggs said Wednesday at a media briefing.

The officers have not been identified.

Police Wednesday declined to release the charges facing the man shot, citing an ongoing investigation.

The shooting is being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Scruggs said, which is standard practice when officers use deadly force on the job.
