Southeast Whitfield

BY LINDSEY YOUNG / lyoung@timesfreepress.com

Head coach: Todd Murray (3-15 here and overall)

Returning starters: 7 offensive; 5 defensive

Last year’s record: 2-8 overall, did not play a region schedule

Key players: Jayden Calhoun (6-4, 300) Sr. OL, Brady Ensley (5-11, 220) Sr. FB/LB, Zander Burkett (5-11, 275) Sr. OL/DL, Brett Cole (6-1, 200) Sr. TE/ LB, Matthew Brock (6-2, 180) Sr. WR/DB, Samuel Harper (6-1, 200), Sr. RB/LB, Ian Lively (5-10, 160) Jr. RB/DB

Season outlook: After a two-year absence, the Raiders return to playing a region schedule as members of 7-AAAA, and with a strong group of interior linemen returning they should be no pushover.

Led by all-region tackle Calhoun — a player Coach Murray described as a “people mover” — Burkett and Trevor Robinson (5-11, 280), Southeast will be able to match up physically with most teams on its schedule. The team’s wing-T offense, which will also feature fullback Ensley and backs Lively, Harper and Matthew Wilcox, should eat up yards and shorten games.

Though numbers are up in the program, depth is still an issue, especially on defense. However, Ensley, Cole, Harper and junior Daniel Franco form one of the better linebacker corps in the region.
