Taxpayer angst

Among Americans’ top frustration with the U.S. tax system is the feeling that some corporations and wealthy people do not pay their fair share.

A new poll by Pew Research Center found that the majority of Americans — 59%— say they are bothered “a lot" by the feeling that some corporations and wealthy people don’t pay their fair share in taxes. About 47% are bothered “a lot" by the complexity of the tax system and 33% by the amount they must pay.

Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are far more likely than Republicans and GOP leaners to say they are bothered by the feeling that some corporations and wealthy don’t pay their fair share.

While the public’s view on taxes has not varied much over recent years, their perception is important as President Joe Biden works on a proposal to raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations to fund other efforts.
